Fallacies

Appeals to emotion-You attempted to manipulate an emotional response in place of a valid or compelling argument. Appeals to emotion include appeals to fear, envy, hatred, pity, pride, and more. It's important to note that sometimes a logically coherent argument may inspire emotion or have an emotional aspect, but the problem and fallacy occurs when emotion is used instead of a logical argument, or to obscure the fact that no compelling rational reason exists for one's position, but they're ultimately flawed, dishonest, and tend to make one's opponents justifiably emotional.
Example: Nathan didn't want to eat his vegetables, but his Mother told him to think about the poor, starving children in a third world country who weren't fortunate enough to have any food at all.

Fallacy of a single cause- When it is assumed that there is merely one cause of a phenomenon, while other possibly contributing causes go undetected, are ignored or are illegitimately minimized. After a shooting “What was the cause of this?” The need for simplification may be necessary so that the news can be seen to have taken action.

Example: After a school shooting, editorialists might claim that it was caused by the shooter’s parents, violence in media, stress on students, or the accessibility of guns. In fact, many different causes—including some of those—may all have contributed.

Memory Biases

There are many different types of memory biases, like the Google effect, Childhood Amnesia and Tip of the tongue.

Google effect   Which is the tendency to forget information that can be found readily online by using Internet search engines such as Google Map.  For example I used to go to places and remember how to get there with no problems, now I can't remember even if I go to same place 5 times. I’ll just go to google map and enter the address.

Childhood Amnesia also called infantile amnesia, is the inability of adults to retrieve episodic memories before the age of 2–4 years, as well as the period before age 10 of which adults retain fewer memories than might otherwise be expected given the passage of time. For example, when I was 3-4 years old we lived in 116 lexington ave, I remember the apartment layout, I remember drinking strawberry milk a lot and playing with our neighbors kids outside and they used to give us lollipops, but when my brother used to ask if I remember certain things I don’t. It is funny how he remember certain things and I don’t and vice versa, we are only 2 years apart.

Tip of the Tongue People experiencing the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon can often recall one or more features of the target word. For example this has happened to me plenty of times and it is very frustrating especially when you know the first letter, since it is really at the tip of your tongue. It could be a name of a person you talking about, you might remember the face but not the name then it sticks in my head for days until I’ll remember it because I saw something that reminded me of her/ him.

Development: Nature vs NURTURE

I chose to analyze the case involving a preteen believed to be between the ages of 10 to 13 years old from Indianapolis, Indiana, Who was seen walking into the CVS Pharmacy. He walked into the store around 11 a.m. on a Monday back in January 2015. He goes into the pharmacy asked for a list of drugs and then says at the bottom of the note, if you push an alarm I will kill everybody in the place. They say he received the pills in a brown paper bag and then fled on foot and hasn’t been seen since. Witnesses told investigators the young boy was manipulated into the robbery by an adult.

I know kids are smart but at 10 years old most kids have no idea how to rob someone. The NURTURE part of this case is he was probably manipulated by gang members, initiation or fear.  Sometimes the teenagers are joining gangs for mere survival or acceptance, or wanting to belong. Maybe at an early age, he wasn’t taught what was right or wrong. He hasn’t been caught so we don’t know in what state of mind he is in, or the reason behind this act. Once we know the reasons or factors behind the child’s decision to commit the robbery, we also can manipulate his environment, and nurture him to know right from wrong, and positively influence him, giving him the opportunity for a second chance in life, before it's too late.

OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING

Observational learning is learning that occurs through observing the behavior of others. This form of learning does not need reinforcement to occur, but instead, requires a model. A social model can be a parent, sibling, friend, or teacher, but—particularly in childhood—a model is someone of authority or higher status. A social model is significantly important in observational learning because it facilitates cognitive process behavior. It helps the learner encode what they observe and store it in memory for later imitation.

When I hear observational learning, right away I think of my boys. How much they observe their Dad throughout the years. How much they saw him as a role model while growing up in a military household. My first son was born in Ft. Bragg, NC, an army base. My 2nd son was born in while we were stationed in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii Army base as well. They are 2 years apart. Every time their Dad walked in the house with his uniform, they wanted to wear his hat, his shirt and dress up as an Army guy. They loved to play with army guys, army toys, army everything. When going to his job they were so fascinated when they saw him in the humvee. Always asking questions, and when the Soldiers were in formation saluting the flag, the kids did too.

After all the years we spent away, we decided to come back to NY and my husband stayed in the National Guard. He was now a part time Soldier and a Full Time Police officer. As the years were passing by, the boys still had the love for military life and  they had more understanding about what the job was, Airborne Infantry ( front line jumping, into combat), as well as the discipline, the training, and the traveling. When going into High school they both joined the JROTC. As parents, we wanted them to continue on to College or at least College ROTC. They decided that after graduating HS they would Join the United States Army as Airborne Infantrymen, just like their Dad. My oldest is currently serving in Europe and my youngest will be heading to Basic training in August. By observing their amazing Dad, soon to be Command Sergeant Major Gonzalez, and hopefully retiring in the next year or so, they wanted to be just like him..

 CONSCIOUSNESS: DREAM ANALYSIS
Assignment IV

Manifest Contest

After 30 years of my mom passing, I had a dream she was floating on top of our house in PR. She had this beautiful white dress. She was telling me to go with her. I told her I can't go with her because I have three beautiful children that depend on me and I didn't want them to go through the same thing growing up without a mother. She said “I understand they are my beautiful grandchildren and May God bless them always” she waved goodbye and left. When I woke up I felt such a relief.

Latent Content

I interpreted this dream as that I needed to stop asking the question “Why ME?!” I needed to continue to live my life with my beautiful family and stop worrying about things I can't control in my life. She will always protect me and my family, she is our angel. This dream for sure was closure. I haven’t had any other dreams with her after that.

Cognitive perspective

I agree by uncovering the hidden meaning of dreams, I believed that people could better understand their fears in their lives. I do believe that dreams send you a messages and it's proven to be correct. If I didn't have this dream, I probably would still be worrying about, things I can't control and wondering, instead of focusing on my family that I love very much. Although I don't dream about my Mom any longer, I still think of her but I know she is at peace and so am I.

SENSATION & PERCEPTION

When you think about anything we experience with our senses, the experience experienced will never be completely identical among participants. Whether its food we eat, a movie we watch, a song we listen to, or a book we read...every person's awareness is painted with the colors which the vision of their life has actualized.

For example The Dress" heard 'round the world took the internet, is the dress black and blue? Or, is it white and gold? Most people will see the blue on the white background as blue, but on the black background some might see it as white.
When I showed it to my daughter, she says white and gold, but my husband and son saw it black and blue. I initially thought its white and gold.

Free Will- The ability to choose, think, and act voluntarily.

As an Army Wife, I’m exercising free will as to remain faithful during deployments.

Determinism- There are many determiners, depending on what pre-conditions are considered to be determinate of an event or action.

I really don’t have any choice in battling with MS. I didn’t choose this illness and I don’t have a choice as to whether or not to fight it.
